Cha Cha Steps and Origins

The Cha Cha or Cha Cha Cha  is a Cuban dance that incorporates  African rhythms and elements of swing dancing.  It became popular in the United States in the 1950's.  The dance consists of three quick steps and is a slower version of the mambo.

It is popular with all ages.  The older generation liking it because of the familiar steps taken from other dances and the younger generation loving it for its adaptability to modern pop music.  It has been described as fun, flirtatious, sensual and passionate.

The name Cha-Cha actually originated in Haiti.  It comes from the name of a bell which was used to keep time while playing music.  The bell made a cha cha sound when rubbed.  The name stuck when the ladies started dancing as their heels clicked on the floor.

The Cha-Cha has definite, distinctive elements which identify it as a Cha-Cha, but also leaves much room for interpretation by the dancers themselves.  If you want to learn this captivating dance, check out our site for the latest information on dance lessons at home.
